CadenceX comes to Sea Otter Classic, the Largest NA Cycling Festival

PEDALCELL BRINGS CADENCEX TO SEA OTTER CLASSIC, NORTH AMERICA’S LARGEST BICYCLE FESTIVAL

PedalCell’s COO Adam Hokin and CEO Vishaal Mali were two of a record 85,000 visitors who descended on the annual Sea Otter Classic, April 11-14 at the Weathertech Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California. With the Sea Otter Classic emerging as the only large-scale North American bicycle trade show, it’s become an important venue for launching new products and technologies to an audience of the bicycle industry, consumers and media. In addition, it’s a great festival for road, electric and mountain bike racing, gran fondos, athlete appearances and to get caught up with some of the legends of the sport. Overall, nearly 1,000 brands occupied 200,000 sq. ft. of display space at the 29th Annual Sea Otter Classic. The event was busier than ever this year with exhibitor numbers up more than 30 percent over 2018’s record turnout. Much of the growth came from increased participation by international brands from Europe, Australia, China, and South Africa.

With all this activity the PedalCell team was busy throughout the show introducing CadenceX to a number of leading bicycles brands in North America. The team brought one of its PedalCell demo bicycles (see below) which allowed Hokin and Mali to demonstrate the integration of CadenceX as well as allow product managers and media to ride the bicycle, getting the feel for the technology and its performance.

Hokin and Mali met with dozens of brands, including the likes of Batch Bicycles, Public Bicycles, Jamis Bicycles, Fezzari Bicycles, Haro Bicycles and Breezer Bikes. At Breezer, they made friend and a fan with one of the cycling’s living legends, Joe Breeze. Joe, along with pioneers of mountain biking Gary Fisher, Charlie Kelly and Tom Ritchey, is known for his central role in developing the mountain bike — he’s credited with designing and building the first all-new mountain bikes, which were called Breezers. At Sea Otter, Joe became fascinated with CandenceX and agreed to take one of the demo units and provide PedalCell with input and comments on his experiences with the technology.

Vishaal commented, “Overall, the reception of our product was great — the use-case of the technology and all it can provide was understood and many product managers at the show were eager to test it out. One pleasantly surprised that one advocate for our technology was the one and only Joe Breeze, who loved the idea of a new and efficient power source for the bicycle -- one that is designed for modern day devices.”

Adam and Vishaal were also interviewed by Bicycle Retailer & Industry Report, which is interested in trend stories on how to power the new generation of smart bicycles. And Electric Bike Report did a video interview with COO Adam Hokin (see below).

Adam’s overall impression of the Sea Otter Classic experience bodes well for PedalCell. “The companies exhibiting at Sea Otter realize that the booming cycling segment is not high-performance, but the everyday urban commuter (especially in the U.S.) who demands a bike that is safer, more connected, and fun-to-use in order to replace their car or public transportation. We discovered from product managers that nearly every brand has smart bikes in their pipeline to tackle this need. Technology, from integrated lighting to connected computers, will allow the urban bike to be a no-brainer transport method for most commuters.”

He continued. “The need for power is at an all-time high for these brands. We learned the past attempts to add any tech to bicycles was met with extreme power constraints. Dynamos and solar panels were discussed as being too volatile and inefficient to fix this problem. Some have looked to batteries but their lifespan and packaging setbacks were a deal-breaker for most, not to mention that the main question — 'Are commuters willing to charge-up a battery every day?; was unanimously met by brands at Sea Otter with the answer NO."
